Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who gets a Habitat home?
A: Families are selected based on income, severity of housing need and ability to pay.  Currently, income requirements range from $37,000-$47,000, based on family size.  We have a wide variety of families with different living situations including single parent households and the number of children ranges from two-seven.

Q: Where does Habitat find its land?
A: There are three main ways Habitat gets land:
1. Donations from towns
2. Individual donations
3. Donations from local developers/businesses

Q: What does Habitat build on the land?
A: Blueprints of the home are drafted based on lot size, zoning restrictions, local bylaws and any other space restrictions.  Depending on the size and restrictions, we can build single-family homes, multi-home developments, or rehabilitate existing structures.

Q: What do Habitat homes look like?
A: South Shore Habitat works very hard to build homes that will blend into their neighborhoods.  Most are 1200 square foot cape, split ranch or colonial style homes with 3 bedrooms and 1.5 baths.  Basements are included when possible and homes can be made handicap accessible if necessary.

Q: How can I help Habitat find land?
A: There are a few ways to help:
1. Contact South Shore Habitat to find out more about our Site Selection Committee or just attend a Site Selection Committee Meeting, held the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:00pm at Committee Night in Braintree.
2. Help research lots in your town - become familiar with zoning laws and building requirements, and search for town-owned land and repossessed land.
3. Join our Outreach Committee, which also meets on Committee Night at 8pm and promotes Habitat within our service area to make viable connections that will, ultimately, lead to land acquisition.

Q: How else can I get involved?
. Volunteer for a build day (781-843-9080 x 12)
. Donate meeting space for South Shore Habitat's use
. Encourage members of your organization/congregation to become involved in South Shore Habitat
. Attend a Ways to Help Habitat session, held the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. to find out more ways you can get involved! (call or check website to confirm meeting location.)
